Possible Side Effects

  1. Stomach pain or cramping - Docusate can cause gastrointestinal irritation in some people. This side effect is usually mild.
  2. Diarrhea - Since docusate works by drawing more water into the intestines to soften stool, it can cause diarrhea in some cases. This is more likely at higher doses.
  3. Electrolyte imbalances - Using docusate sodium long-term, especially in high doses, may cause low levels of potassium or other electrolytes. This is uncommon.
  4. Skin rash - Allergic reactions to docusate are rare but can occasionally cause rashes. If this occurs, discontinue use.
  5. Throat/esophageal irritation - Docusate capsules can irritate or burn the throat or esophagus, especially if not swallowed quickly with enough fluid. Take with a full glass of water.
  6. Drug interactions - Docusate may interact with certain medications like warfarin, mineral oil, or thyroid hormones. Speak to a doctor before using if on other medications.
  7. Dehydration - Chronic use can lead to loss of fluids and electrolyte imbalance. Be sure to drink plenty of water while using docusate sodium.

Most side effects are mild and uncommon. Discontinue use if any bothersome or serious side effects develop. As with any medication, speak to a doctor before using docusate if pregnant or breastfeeding.
