Joe’s Translation: How 5% Hypertonic Saline Works

  • The formula: Sodium Chloride 5% is a hypertonic saline solution. The higher salt concentration draws excess fluid out of the cornea through osmosis, helping reduce swelling.
  • Plain English: This is not a moisturizing drop. It pulls fluid out of the cornea to reduce pressure and blurry vision caused by corneal edema.
  • When to use it: If your doctor recommends a 5% sodium chloride solution for corneal edema, you wake up with swelling-related blur, or you need a reliable daytime drop (instead of thicker nighttime ointment) comparable to Muro 128®.
